Dry Eyes After Eye Surgery? Here’s What You Can Do

Many patients experience dry eyes after Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or other eye surgeries. While temporary, it can be uncomfortable. At Restore Surgical Center in Kelowna, we’re here to help you manage this common post-surgery issue.

Why Do Dry Eyes Occur After Surgery?

Surgical procedures can affect the tear film by disrupting the nerves responsible for tear production. This can lead to:

  • Itchiness or burning
  • Redness and irritation
  • Blurred vision or the feeling of something in your eye

How to Manage Dry Eyes Post-Surgery

1. Use Prescribed Eye Drops

Your surgeon may recommend artificial tears or lubricating drops. Follow the dosage instructions carefully, as overuse can sometimes worsen dryness.

2. Apply Warm Compresses

A warm, moist cloth placed over your closed eyelids can help stimulate oil glands, improving tear quality. Do this for 5-10 minutes twice a day.

3. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water can help maintain tear production. Aim for at least 8 cups a day to keep your eyes naturally moist.

4. Avoid Dry Environments

Limit your exposure to air conditioning, heating vents, and fans. Using a humidifier at home can also help maintain moisture levels.

5. Take Omega-3 Supplements

Omega-3 fatty acids can improve tear quality. Include sources like flaxseed oil, fish oil, and chia seeds in your diet or take a supplement as recommended by your doctor.

6. Rest Your Eyes

After surgery, avoid excessive screen time and take regular breaks. The 20-20-20 rule helps reduce digital strain and dryness.

When to Seek Help

If symptoms persist beyond a few weeks or worsen, it’s essential to reach out to your surgeon. Chronic dry eye may require additional treatment, such as medicated drops or punctal plugs.
