How to Sleep After Eyelid Surgery: Tips to Promote Faster Healing

Recovery after blepharoplasty is typically smooth, but how you sleep during the first week can significantly impact healing, swelling, and comfort.

Here’s how to sleep well—and heal better—after eyelid surgery at Restore Surgical Center.

1. Sleep on Your Back, Elevated

Use two to three pillows to keep your head elevated at a 30–45 degree angle. This helps reduce swelling and minimizes fluid buildup around the eyes.

2. Avoid Sleeping on Your Side or Stomach

Pressure on your face can disrupt sutures or increase bruising. Stick to your back until your surgeon gives the all-clear—usually after 7–10 days.

3. Use Cold Compresses Before Bed

In the first 48 hours, a gentle cold compress can help minimize swelling. Use it for 10–15 minutes before sleeping, as directed.

4. Keep Your Environment Calm and Dark

Lower the lights, silence your phone, and create a cool, calm bedroom. Quality sleep promotes tissue repair and reduces recovery time.

5. Consider a Travel Pillow or Wedge

If you tend to roll over in your sleep, a U-shaped pillow or wedge cushion can help keep your head and neck in the proper position all night.

6. Follow All Post-Op Instructions

Take medications on time, avoid eye rubbing, and stay consistent with prescribed ointments or drops to prevent complications.
